Lady Crusaders Defeat Lady Bulldogs (Gannon)

The Bulldogs came out strong in the opening half against the Lady Crusaders. Olivia Rouser and Paris Gilmore were the sole scorers for the Lady Crusaders, each contributing two points. Teagan Clark led the Bulldogs in the opening half with ten points and three rebounds. Olivia Riechard and Caitlyn Klug each contributed four points to the Bulldog offense. Gesu held a 20-4 lead over the Lady Crusaders at the end of the first half. 

The Lady Crusaders came back fighting in the second half, outscoring the Bulldogs 14-8, but in the end it was Gesu who came out on top in the end, winning the contest by a final score of 28-18. Teagan Clark led Gesu with 12 points for the game. Caitlyn Klug added eight points of her own for the Bulldogs. Olivia Rouser ended the game with five points for the Lady Crusaders.

Emmanuel Christian Academy tops St. Mary’s Berea

A competitive battle between St. Mary’s Berea and Emmanuel Christian Academy put Emmanuel Christian Academy on top by a score of 43-36.  Emmanuel Christian Academy started off the game strong, winning the tip off and dominating the first quarter.  Christopher Livingston was the key contributor on ECA’s offense with 23 points and 10 rebounds.  A strong second quarter performance by St. Mary’s Berea allowed them to take the lead at half, but they were not able to secure it, as ECA came rushing back in the fourth quarter.  Caden Veltcamp led the way for St. Mary’s, as he had 14 points on the day, adding 7 rebounds. 

Bulldogs Come out Barking

The Gesu Bulldogs defeated the St. Raphael Raiders, 31-17, on Saturday afternoon in game one of the Morrisey Classic, hosted at Gilmore Academy. A tightly contested first quarter developed into a Bulldog lead at the half, 21-8. Gesu kept the lead throughout the third and fourth quarters, outscoring St. Raphael 10-9 in the final half. Finn McConville led the Bulldogs with eight points, and Max Mursean's five rebounds and three steals helped support the cause, as Gesu advanced to 1-0 on the weekend.

Vikings Defeat Lancers in Opener

After a hard fought battle in the first round, the Vikings of St. Mary Chardon came out victorious with a win over the Lancers of Gilmour Academy, 48 to 27. Ashton Gotham was the leading scorer for the Vikings, with 17 points and Joshua Bruce was the leading scorer for the Lancers with 16 points. Oliver Galeazzo, Evan Galeazzo, Adam Rababy, and Kyle Yates all played excellent defense for the Vikings with 2 rebounds each. Nathan Nootbaar was the top rebounder for the Lancers with 2 as well. Some of the other leading scorers for the Vikings were Evan Galeazzo and Adam Rababy who netted 6 and 5 points respectively. Although St. Mary came out on top, Gilmour kept the pressure on with their ferocious defense throughout the entire game. 

 

St. Vincent DePaul Comes Back to Win the Morrissey Classic

St. Vincent DePaul - 36 / Seton Catholic - 31

An offensive explosion by the St. Vincent de Paul Irish propelled the team from Akron to the 8th grade boys championship of the Morrissey Classic, defeating Seton Catholic of Hudson, 36-31.

The Irish outscored the Crusaders, 19-10, in the final period to complete the comeback victory. 

St. Vincent de Paul trailed 24-19 early in the final period but rallied to take a 26-24 lead when Alvin completed a three-point play with just under five minutes to play.

Seton answered from the free throw line with Sam making three of four, but a basket by Daryl and free throws by Alvin pushed the Irish lead up to 30-27.

Sam cut the St Vincent de Paul lead to 30-29 on a pair of free throws, but Alvin pushed the Irish advantage to 34-29 thanks to a bucket and two made free throws. The Irish were in command from there on out.

Alvin opened up the game with four consecutive points for St Vincent de Paul, but Seton took advantage of empty Irish possessions and countered with four points of its own. 

The Crusaders used five points in the final 90 seconds to take a 9-6 lead after one period. 

Sam, who scored the final points of the first period, opened the second with a great scoring drive to push the Crusaders lead to 11-6. The Irish struggled offensively in the second period, as it took 6 1/2 minutes to get on the scoreboard. Nausor broke the drought with a nice basket off a feed from Daryl. Seton looked in command in the closing minute, but a steal and breakaway lay-up by Keion cut the Crusaders lead to 14-10 at the intermission.

St. Vincent de Paul picked up its defensive intensity in period number three, and defense led to offense with baskets from Martavean and Kevin to tie the game a 14-14

Seton stopped the run when Ben recovered from a steal attempt and buried a short jumper for a 16-14 edge. Aidan then came up with a transition basket to push the Crusaders lead to 18-14. It was part of a 7-0 that pushed Seton's lead to a game-high seven point points at 21-14. But three free throws down in the final ten seconds by the Irish cut the lead to 21-17. 

Alvin led the way with 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Irish

Ben was the top scorer for Seton with 13 points.

Sts. Joseph and John's Rolls Over Gesu

Sts. Joseph & John - 56 / Gesu - 39

Hot shooting was the difference in Saints Joseph and John's lopsided 56-39 victory.
Leading the way for the Vikings was number 13, Jack with 16 points, 12 of which came from beyond the arc.

Not only was the sharp shooting effective, but speed and height were clearly proved too much for Gesu as they struggled for rebounds and effective shots.
 

For Gesu, Christopher had a great game accounting for 15 points and three rebounds.

St. Christine Wins a Thriller

St. Christine - 54 / St. Sebastian - 53

St. Sebastian came out surging out of the gates. They outscored St. Christine's squad by 8 in the first and used their early lead as foundation to keep this advantage for the first 3 periods. Then, after Sebastian's high scoring big man fouled out at the beginning of the fourth and their three point attempts were not dropping at the same rate as the first half, Christine was able to swallow up the defensive glass and pounded the paint on fast breaks. St. Christine's pouring in of buckets from close range allowed them to make a fantastic run and close the books on a thrilling one point victory.

St. Barnabas Starts Hot; Defeats Notre Dame

St. Barnabas - 57 / Notre Dame - 31

St Barnabas ran away Notre Dame from the start but Notre Dame finished with a strong 4th quarter. St Barnabas won by a score of 57-31 led by scorers Geo Loya (17), Ronnie Schultz (15), and Thomas Crowe (13). Loya and Shultz also added 11 rebounds each to aid their team. Notre Dame seemed to be undone by the fast break offense of St Barnabas. The leading scorer and rebounder for Notre Dame was Justin Lazuka with 8 and 6 respectively.

St. Raphael is the 2016 Morrissey Classic Champion

St Raphael 34, St. Christine 26 

The strong defensive presence from St. Raphael set the tone in the eighth girls championship game victory. 

St. Raphael set the tone early on the defensive side of the ball. On the night, the team had XX steals in the game and limited St. Christine to XX in the first half. St. Raphael was led on offensive by Kaylie, who chipped in an impressive nine points and six rebounds and Clare had seven points and eight rebounds. Supplying important work on the boards was Clare who led the team with her eight rebounds. St. Raphael led through all four quarters, including a 19-13 score line at the half. 

St. Christine made an impressive run late in the game, but the come back effort came up just short. With under two minutes to play in regulation, St. Christine trailed by just seven points. Supporting the offensive efforts for the team was Anisah who led the team with 17 points and 20 rebound on the day. Adding onto the offensive performance for St. Christine was Samantha who manufactured three points in the contest. 

St. Raphael would hold off a late come-from-behind effort from St. Christine to finalize the 34-26 final score. With the victory, St. Raphael is crowned the eighth grade girls tournament champions.

Gesu Edges St. Francis

Gesu - 35 / St. Francis - 33

In a back and forth contest, Gesu was able to pull away thanks to some gritty defense and clutch shooting.
Leading the way for Gesu was guard, number 32 Aubrey who had 10 points, 9 of which came from three. She also lead Gesu with 7 rebounds on the afternoon.
St. Francis was lead by Madeleine who had 14 points and was 4 of 7 inside the arc. She cashed in with six free throws as well. Kieran had a big day on the glass with 12 rebounds, 6 on both ends.
St. Francis had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds but their layup was blocked and Gesu escaped with the win.

Holy Family Starts Hot, Finishes Strong

Holy Trinity - 37 / Holy Family - 20

Holy Trinity had a firm grasp on the game from the start. An array of open looks from mid-range allowed Trinity to capitalize on the dirty work they did in the open court. Their 10 steals bested the efforts of Holy Family. On the other hand, Holy Family was able find open lanes to the hoop and shots from beyond the perimeter but they weren't falling consistently enough for them to be able to cut into the large deficit.

OLCS Outlasts CoS

OLCS 23 / CoS - 14

Communion of Saints Sabres and Our Lady's Christian Raiders battled back and forth in the opening half. The Raiders led 12-9 going into the second half.

The second half proved to be a defensive battle but Our Lady's Christian managed to come out on top. Their calm attitude and crafty offense allowed them to overcome their tough opponent.

For Our Lady's Christian, #31 Alexandra contributed a team-high eight points and seven rebounds. #13 Ella contributed five points, four steals and one block.

#15 Bridget K. had an outstanding game and led the way for Communion of Saints with five points, seven steals and three rebounds and one block. #33 Kassidy and #43 Clara both added five rebounds.

St. Raphael Out-Duels St. Francis

St. Raphael - 46 / St. Francis - 33

St. Raphael would get the victory over St. Francis to conclude the first day of basketball for the Morrissey Classic. Both teams would trade baskets back and forth to start the game. St. Raphael would have the lead at the end of the first quarter. St. Francis would come back to make it a tie game at the end of the second quarter. The score would be tied at 19 at the half.

Both teams would continue to put points on the board in the second half. However, St. Raphael would the slight advantage at the end of the third quarter of play with the score of 31-30 in favor of the Raiders. St. Francis would keep battling in the contest. St. Raphael would start to keep the momentum on offense going, and they would get the win by the score of 46-33. Ashley led the scoring for St. Francis with 16 points. Clare led St. Raphael in scoring with 11.

Our Lady's Christian School Buzzer Beats Holy Trinity in Overtime

Our Lady's Christian School - 41 / Holy Trinity - 39

The Court 2 finale was as exciting as any other game today with a buzzer beater win in overtime. OLCS was in command for most of this game behind a stellar performance from Daniella Shaugnessy who led the team in points. Eavan Carney hit key three pointers to keep Holy Trinity within striking distance for much of the game. Sophia Pajak of Holy Trinity hit a buzzer beater to end the 3rd quarter behind 30-26. Under a minute to go in a low scoring 4th quarter it was tied at 34-34 and both teams failed to score and the game went to overtime. After frenetic final period Emma Coleman hit a buzzer beater in overtime to give Our Lady a 41-39 victory.

Seton Catholic Outlasts Sts. Joseph & John

Seton Catholic - 48 / Sts. Joseph & John - 45

It was a tightly contested showdown as the Crusaders of Seton Catholic took on the Vikings of Sts. Joseph and John on Saturday evening. After 32 minutes of play in the Morrissey Classic, the teams would go back and forth early in the game as the teams would keep the score close. The Vikings would take a slight score advantage at the end of the first quarter. Sts. Joseph and John would lead Seton Catholic 16-12. The game would remain close throughout the second quarter. The Crusaders would shrink the deficit, but the Vikings would still lead at the half 20-18.

Seton Catholic would keep the momentum going as they would lead the game at the end of the third quarter by the score of 39-31. Sts. Joseph and John would start a comeback in the fourth quarter. In an exciting finish, Seton Catholic held on to get the victory 48-45. Michael of Seton Catholic led the team in points with 22 recorded. Mason of Sts. Joseph and John led the Vikings in points with 17.

Notre Dame Holds Off St. Sebastian

Notre Dame - 77 / St. Sebastian - 74

Both teams came out flying to start off the game. Both offenses ran at a fast pace and with some masterful ball handling from both sides, it made for a closely contested contest. However, Notre Dame would use their vision quick ball movement to take the lead. However, St. Sebastian would go on to edge their way back into the game thanks to some fine defensive play. Notre Dame would come out of the first quarter leading 18-8.

Notre Dame would continue their fast paced offense into the second quarter. They were able to make a couple baskets with their first couple of possessions in the quarter to extend their lead to 23-8. St. Sebastian had a couple of good offensive possessions where they were able to move the Notre Dame defense out of position and capitalize on their chances. This cut into the deficit making the score 27-17 in Notre Dame's favor. Although St. Sebastian had alittle bit of a momentum swing at the end of the quarter, Notre Dame was able to finish their chances and went into halftime leading 38-27.

St. Sebastian came out with a sense of resolve in the second half, and moved the ball with a sense of purpose. They slowly inched their way into the game and cut the deficit to 6. Notre Dame would not take this lying down and soon scored a few points of their own. Although there were a few momentum shifts throughout the quarter, St. Sebastian was able to shorten the deficit to 4 points going into the fourth. Notre Dame came out leading 52-48.

St. Sebastian came went into the fourth quarter feeling confident after their third quarter offensive performance. And thanks to a quick 3 and layup, they were able to take the lead. However, Notre Dame would storm back and regain the lead quickly. The game quickly turned into a game of endurance when the lead changed hands more than a few times. After an exciting series events in the last minute of the game, with the lead changing hands 3 times, Notre Dame was able to hit a layup in the final 10 seconds of the game to secure the victory. The final score ended up being 77-74 with both teams completely drained from such a hard fought battle.

St. Christine Beats Gesu in Overtime

St. Christine - 39 / Gesu - 36

Despite a strong first quarter by the lady Bulldogs, the St. Christine Cursaders came roaring back to cut down a double digit lead. In an aggressive and spirited second half, both teams fought hard to taken the lead, but found themselves even after regulation.

It was an exciting, nail-biting overtime full of free throw opportunities. Samantha Holder and Jamie Nelson ultimately secured the 39-36 victory for the Crusaders, sinking much needed free -throws.

St. Vincent DePaul Pulls Away in the 2nd Half

St. Vincent DePaul - 68 / Gesu - 42

Gesu and St Vincent were in a close fought battle into the third quarter, but size became the deciding factor as St. Vincent was able to use their height to reach the boards more effectively leading to a victory with a score of 68-42.

Alvin Stallworth led the scoring for St Vincent with 20 points and the rebounding towers were Daryl Peterson with 5 and Martavien Johnson with 4. The leading scorer for Gesu was Matthew Benesek and Danny Krebs with 12 points each; Danny Krebs also led with 5 rebounds. Gesu was forced to put their bodies in the way to slow St Vincent leading to 2 players fouling out.
